We all know that mid-day slump and having to find ways to get through it can be difficult.  It may come as a surprise that there are healthy food options instead of yet another caffeinated beverage to wake back up.  Some foods with natural energy are not only healthy, but also pretty tasty!  There’s a reason we call fruit Nature’s Candy.  When blood sugar is low, we often feel tired.  A quick way to boost energy is to grab fruit that is perfect for on-the-go such as a banana or apple.  Add some delicious ripe blueberries or strawberries to some yogurt for a sweet afternoon treat.

An unusual way to boost energy using food is to freeze some grapes.  While eating grapes fresh from the market are delicious, it is a surprising treat to pop a frozen one in your mouth and enjoy a snack that tastes like a sorbet.  This is a low-calorie and satisfying treat that will boost energy, hydrate and provide antioxidants.  An easy treat that requires no prep besides storing them in the freezer for a  couple hours before consuming.

Sometimes when we are feeling a bit sleepy and unusually hungry, we are just thirsty.  Try drinking a cold glass of lemon water to boost energy and help to reduce hunger when between meals.  The electrolytes added with a squeeze of lemon are beneficial for cells to produce energy.  It’s a win-win to rehydrate and feel more rested.

Nuts are also great energy sources.  The magnesium in these natural snacks are extremely helpful in converting sugars to energy.  The fiber in these foods with natural energy is useful to keep blood sugars level the protein will prevent hunger that can lead to unwanted extra calories. 

If snacking is on the agenda, add some hummus to the mix.  Hummus is a healthy dip made of chickpeas, sesame seeds, olive oil, lemon and garlic.  Eating this delicious blend of protein and fiber will help to stabilize blood sugar and increase energy as well.  Serving hummus with crunchy vegetables or adding to a sandwich is a great way to boost energy and feel satisfied too.
