How to Stay Social When Friends Are Diagnosed With Alzheimer's or Dementia

Keeping things social and fun when you are associating with a patient who has Alzheimer's Disease is not always easy or apparent. That is to say that not everyone knows what they can do to bring the spark of joy and entertainment into the lives and hearts of the people that they love who are suffering from this dreadful disease.

However, we have a few recommendations for things that are fun for older adults who suffer from Alzheimer's and for the people who take care of them to try out in the Collinsville area.

Watering Plants Around the House

Taking care of plants around the house can be a fun way to bring excitement into one's day. It is an easy way to keep people active and to share a small moment of joy with one another. This also literally brings more life into the space as the plants will grow and become living things that you helped to nurture.

Caring for a Household Pet

An Alzheimer's patient may not be able to fully take care of a pet by themselves, but they can help with small things such as grooming, petting, and cuddling the pet. This is a great way for somebody with Alzheimer's and a pet to bond together in a meaningful and loving way.

There is no question that people get a lot of satisfaction out of having pets, and this applies to those who have Alzheimer's as well. It really gives them a sense of meaning and helps them to feel happier. It can be a very special thing to see them light up when they are introduced to a new pet.

Turn on a Favorite Show or Movie

There is great comfort in watching programming that one is already familiar with, and those who are suffering from Alzheimer's may find extra comfort in watching a familiar movie or TV show. They can engage with the content in a way that is comfortable for them.

You may start to become accustomed to the various television shows and programs that someone suffering from Alzheimer's enjoys. You may even become enamored with the same programming yourself over some time.

Small Household Chores

You should never think that an older adult who is suffering from Alzheimer's is incapable of doing small chores around the house. As a matter of fact, many people who suffer from Alzheimer's, take great pride in accomplishing certain chores that are assigned to them.

You may want to get them started with something such as sweeping or vacuuming or dusting. These small chores help you maintain the house somewhat better and also give the person suffering from Alzheimer's a greater sense of purpose in their day. It is a win-win for everybody involved and ultimately helps make those who suffer from Alzheimer's feel a little more useful and productive. You want them to feel good about themselves like this, and this is a small way to make that happen. Look for small wins like this whenever you are working with an Alzheimer's patient in the Collinsville area or anywhere else. Every little bit counts! Feel free to contact us.
