How to Find Local Friend Groups and Meetups With Shared Hobbies This Summer

Summertime in Collinsville is a great time to get out and engage in activities with new friends. For older adults, this may be difficult, especially if they are new to the Collinsville area. Unlike previous generations, finding new friends and social groups can be done easily online. But there are still plenty of ways to meet new people without an internet connection. With that said, here are our recommendations on how to find local friend groups for older adults.

Offline Options

  • Reach out to your local library. Many public libraries provide socializing opportunities for all ages. Most are eager to receive volunteers that want to read to children. This can be a great way to connect with the younger generation and their parents while also giving back to the community.
  • Sign up for an exercise class.  Exercise classes are a great way to stay healthy and meet new friends. There are plenty of classes specifically catered toward older adults. These may include tai chi, water aerobics, dance, and yoga.
  • Start a mall walking group.  While walking can be pleasant in the spring or fall, the summers of Collinsville may be too hot for walking. Luckily, malls are well air-conditioned, providing a comfortable walking experience. Starting a mall walking group, or joining an existing one, can be a great way to become socially engaged.
  • Organize a game night. Games are an excellent way to keep the mind sharp, and also provide a way to maintain social relationships. Be it cards or dice, there are plenty of games to choose from to stay socially and mentally engaged.

Online Options

  • AARP. AARP is already an excellent resource for retired adults. But the group provides more than just advocacy and recommendations– they can also help you find socializing opportunities. Travel groups, local chapters, and volunteering opportunities are all great ways you can socialize with AARP. The AARP Illinois page has a dedicated section for events and volunteering opportunities.
  • Meetup. A meetup is an online form that is designed to bring people together in the real world. While not targeted to any specific age group, just about anyone can find some sort of activity they would be interested in attending. From wine tasting to gentle walks, you can find a little bit of everything on Meetup.
  • Facebook. While Facebook is well known as a way to stay in touch with old friends and family, it is also a great way to make new friends. Facebook has a feature called "groups" where you can find other individuals in your area who share similar interests. Simply search your town's name in the search bar to find local groups in your area. This can lead to a wide range of activities from bird watching to activities in the park.
  • Stitch. Stitch is a social media platform specifically designed for people over the age of 50. The app is a great way to make online friends, but it can also lead to meeting people in real life. The platform has a dedicated "Activities" feature that brings people together in person. This could be a movie group, a visit to a new museum exhibit, or a way to check out a new restaurant with new friends.
