3 Ways to Continue Holiday Traditions With Limited Mobility This Holiday Season

Holiday traditions are an important component in a senior's quality of life. Maintaining these cherished traditions is even more essential in the midst of lifestyle changes caused by mobility, vision, or other issues. If your senior loved one is worried about the loss of these treasured activities, there are steps you can take to reassure them that they still enjoy them throughout the Bolingbrook area.

Enjoying the Holiday Season as a Senior

Seniors in Bolingbrook, Crest Hill, Darien, Downers Grove, Joliet, Lockport, Romeoville, and Woodridge can still enjoy their favorite holiday traditions even when they have limited mobility. It just requires a little planning, creativity, and maybe a willing helper. Here are three suggestions for helping your senior enjoy the holidays despite mobility issues.

1. Decorating Their Home

Even something as simple as decorating a tree or putting up a few holiday decorations might be too intimidating for an elderly loved one with mobility issues. However, it just doesn't seem like the holidays without the traditional decorations. You can help by taking your senior tree shopping and then helping them decorate it. If they no longer have room for a full-sized tree, consider a tabletop model from a local craft store.

You definitely don't want them climbing a ladder to hang outdoor lights! If the outdoor lights are a must-have, consider hiring someone to do it. An alternative is to string LED lights on the inside of a window frame. These energy-efficient lights stay cool to the touch so there's no risk of them setting the curtains on fire. Both your loved ones and passers-by will still get to enjoy the colorful lights when you go this much safer route.

2. Attending Holiday Events

Going to church, enjoying holiday concerts, and attending school plays were likely all part of a senior's holiday traditions. They may still want to enjoy them but are worried about how they will get there and back home again. Many seniors are also reticent about asking for help because they "don't want to be a bother" so Senior Care suggests being proactive with your loved one.

Instead of waiting for them to ask, which is unlikely, invite them to go with you. They'll get to enjoy the joy of the season with a lovely family member — without the worries about transportation!

3. Enjoying the Holiday Lights

Piling the family in the car, cranking up the Christmas music, and riding around looking at all the lights and decorations are beloved holiday traditions for many families. Unfortunately, mobility or vision issues may have curtailed a senior's ability to drive. That's okay because they can enjoy the holiday sights, even more, when someone else takes over the driving!

Pack a thermos of hot chocolate and some cups, put on some favorite holiday music, and don't forget the holiday treats. A warm jacket and a cozy lap blanket will help keep your favorite senior warm without overheating the vehicle's other occupants. If family members have moved away, why not invite friends or neighbors? The more people along, the merrier!
