Can You Suddenly Get COPD as an Elderly Adult?

COPD is an acronym for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. It's a serious and progressive lung disorder that makes it harder to breathe due to increased difficulty with airflow in the lungs. COPD can make everyday activities difficult, exhausting, and sometimes even dangerous for older adults. That’s why many seniors, especially those at high risk for COPD, find it increasingly important to take steps to reduce their risks.

What is COPD?

COPD is a progressive lung disorder that restricts airflow in the lungs, making it difficult to breathe. It can be caused by a combination of environmental and genetic factors. Frequent exposure to pollutants like cigarette smoke or dust may increase the chances of developing the illness.

Can COPD Develop Suddenly in Elderly Adults?

Unfortunately, it is possible for older adults to suddenly develop COPD. Although this is rare and usually not the initial presentation of COPD, sudden onset can occur in elderly adults who are at high risk of developing the condition.

Causes of Sudden COPD

The most common cause of sudden-onset COPD in an elderly adult is constant exposure to a toxin or air pollutant. Air pollution from vehicle or factory emissions has been linked to more frequent incidents of coughing, breathlessness, and other symptoms that characterize sudden-onset COPD. Other possible causes vary depending on existing conditions. This may include respiratory infections such as bronchitis or pneumonia, allergic reactions like asthma attacks, lifestyle choices (such as smoking), and obesity.

Risk Factors for Sudden Onset of COPD

Living closely with smokers may increase an individual's risk factor for developing sudden onset of COPD. Other possible factors that can increase the risk of sudden-onset COPD may include:

  • Previous episodes of lung disease
  • Compromised immune system responses
  • Advanced age
  • Prolonged exposure to poor indoor air quality
  • Family history
  • Obesity
  • Tobacco use
  • Occupational hazards, including both past and current jobs involving a high level of environmental contamination

Symptoms of Sudden-Onset COPD

Symptoms of sudden-onset COPD in an elderly adult may include:

  • Coughing that produces discolored mucus
  • Chest tightness and pain
  • Difficulty inhaling deeply or exhaling completely
  • Wheezing, shortness of breath, or labored breathing
  • Sputum production with a thick, ropey consistency
  • General fatigue and weakness
  • A persistent feeling of congestion in the chest despite coughing

Any time a loved one shows worrisome symptoms of respiratory distress, consulting a doctor can help caregivers learn more about their options and ensure that the elderly individual receives the right treatment.

Reducing the Risk of COPD

It is important for seniors to lead a healthy lifestyle in order to reduce their risk of COPD. Because many cases of sudden-onset COPD can be related to environmental factors, it's a good idea to monitor the air quality both inside and outside the home. Those who live with smokers should consider investing in air purification devices or avoiding secondhand smoke as much as possible.

Seniors should also be careful with activities that involve inhaling chemicals and fumes, including things like landscaping and painting. Furthermore, they may benefit from maintaining an overall healthy lifestyle, including maintaining a low BMI and getting regular exercise.
