Pumpkin Craft Fun and Assisted Living at Home

Pumpkin Craft Fun and Assisted Living at Home

October is the month of all things pumpkin.  Fall brings a wonderful reason to visit apple orchards and pumpkin patches with families.  An afternoon spent at a local patch offers leisure activities such as enjoying a hayride while sipping a hot cider and picking the perfect pumpkin for carving and decorating.

When the chosen pumpkins arrive home, it is time to create a festive decoration.  Some Pumpkin craft fun is traditional such as carving and displaying as a jack-o-lantern on the front porch.  The scooped out pumpkin seeds can be baked and served as a delicious snack as well.

Halloween doesn’t mean that all pumpkins are doomed to be scary.  Take this season to create a smiley pumpkin!  Using Googly eyes and some permanent markers, the pumpkin can be a welcome site for any trick-or-treater.

One fun and creative way to decorate a pumpkin fresh from the patch is to melt leftover and unwanted crayons over it.   Arrange the unwrapped crayons fanned around the stem.  Using a heat gun or hair dryer, aim it toward the stem and watch the crayons melt!  It may take some different approaches to get it to spill over the sides; but this is a fun and inexpensive way to decorate.

A creative and unique pumpkin craft fun activity is to create a camping style lantern.  First, carve the pumpkin through the bottom instead of the top.  Scoop out the seeds and pulp.  Carve another round hole toward the top of the pumpkin that will serve as the “light” of a camping lantern.  Using green and silver paint, create a lid for the lantern light and the base.  A metal wire can be attached to the sides of the pumpkin to look like a metal handle.

Another way to put a pumpkin to good use is to hang a wooden sign off its stem.  This can be used to direct Halloween party traffic to the front door or back yard.  It is also a fun way to just say “welcome” as friends and family enter the home.
