4 Things Seniors Should Keep in Their Homes During Flu Season

Winter is notorious for being the flu season, and it can be hard to avoid getting sick if you're out and about during this time. Getting a flu shot may help protect a person from the virus, but it doesn't guarantee you won't contract the flu. It's a good idea to stock up on some flu essentials just in case the virus finds its way to you during the flu season.

Medications

While the flu isn't curable, there are some over-the-counter medications you can get to improve your symptoms, as well as a few prescription medications if you're diagnosed with the flu by a doctor. Here are a few over-the-counter medications you should keep at home in case of the flu:

  • Pain medications such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, naproxen sodium, and/or aspirin
  • Cold medications, such as Dayquil
  • Flu medications, such as Tamiflu or Theraflu
  • Nasal spray

If necessary, you can go to the doctor and get prescription flu medication to manage more severe symptoms.

Disinfectants

If you often have people over or go out in public regularly, it's a good idea to keep disinfectants at home or on your person while outside. Disinfect your home regularly with antibacterial cleaners and disinfectant sprays. You should also keep hand sanitizer on you while out in public. Antibacterial hand soap can help a lot too!

Groceries

A lot of people will lose their appetite when they have the flu, but it's still important to eat so your body gets enough nutrients. Food like chicken soup can even help you feel a bit better because it can help soothe an upset stomach or headache.

Other food or drink you can have while sick are:

  • Water with electrolytes (sports drinks are not recommended)
  • Tea
  • Fruit or vegetable juice
  • Applesauce
  • Bananas

When consuming fruit while sick, you should be careful about the amount of sugar you're taking in. Fruit may not have added sugar, but too much of any type of sugar while sick can cause you to feel worse.

Distractions

Staying at home for days on end doesn't sound like much fun to most people. It can get lonely, boring, and frustrating when you can't go out to do anything so as not to risk getting anyone else sick. However, there are ways you can distract yourself so you aren't tempted to be out and about as much.

Some things you can do include:

  • Reading a book
  • Watching a movie or a TV show
  • Engaging in a non-strenuous hobby
  • Treating yourself to an at-home spa day
