Fall Prevention: Caregiver's Room-by-Room Checklist

Falls are the leading cause of injury among older adults, and the home, a place that should feel completely safe, is where most of them happen. If your parent lives in Dover, Middletown, or elsewhere in the region, you may be wondering what you can actually do to reduce that risk.

A room-by-room walk-through is one of the most practical places to start. Many of the most effective changes are inexpensive and straightforward.

Bathroom

The bathroom is the highest-risk room in most homes. Grab bars installed in the shower stall and beside the toilet are the most impactful single modification you can make. Unlike towel bars, they are designed to hold body weight; a licensed contractor can install them in a couple of hours for a modest cost.

A non-slip mat inside the tub or shower provides traction underfoot. Remove rugs from the bathroom floor, as they slide and bunch in ways that lead to falls. If your loved one has difficulty with the standard tub, a shower bench or a walk-in shower conversion can make bathing dramatically safer.

Bedroom

Nighttime trips to the bathroom account for many falls. Keep the path from the bed to the door clear, and use a night light or motion-activated light to improve visibility at night.

Make sure the bedside lamp is within easy reach so your loved one does not have to lean far to turn it on.

A bed height that allows your loved one to sit on the edge with feet flat on the floor is safer than one that is too high or too low. Bed risers or a lower-profile bed frame are inexpensive adjustments. A grab bar or bed rail on one side gives a secure handhold when rising.

Living Room and Common Areas

Furniture should be stable enough to lean on without sliding. Chairs and sofas with firm armrests make it easier to push up from a seated position. Remove low coffee tables or ottomans that are easy to stumble over.

Good lighting is important throughout the home and is an important part of fall prevention for seniors. In older homes in Georgetown or Lewes, that may mean adding floor lamps in dim corners. Extension cords should never cross walkways, and all loose rugs should be removed. Bare floors are safer.

Stairs and Entryways

Both handrails should be present and structurally sound; test them yourself by putting weight on them. Stair treads should be non-slip, and lighting at the top and bottom of any staircase helps ensure each step is visible.

The entryway is where shoes get kicked off and bags get set down, creating tripping hazards. A bench where your loved one can sit to remove their shoes reduces the risk of losing balance while standing on one foot. Keep the entry clear.

When to Bring in Help

Some modifications are genuinely simple: removing rugs, adding a lamp, repositioning furniture. Others, particularly grab bars, handrails, and anything involving plumbing, should be handled by a professional.

An occupational therapist can conduct a formal home safety assessment and provide specific recommendations. This may be worth arranging if your loved one's fall risk is elevated and you are seeking additional support with fall prevention for seniors.

The CDC's STEADI initiative offers resources for assessing fall risk that you can review before that appointment.

Creating a Safer Home Environment

Reducing fall risks at home does not have to involve major renovations. Small changes throughout the home can support fall prevention for seniors, making daily activities safer and helping older adults maintain their independence.
