Guide for Caregivers: How to Build Rapport With Seniors

A strong rapport between a caregiver and a senior can be an invaluable connection. It can ease a senior's fears about losing their independence and allow the caregiver better to serve the client's emotional and physical needs. However, it's not always easy to establish that easy relationship, especially if seniors are hesitant about having a caregiver in their home. With diligence and compassion, though, it's possible to forge relationships with even the most hesitant seniors. If you are a caregiver looking for ways to create a relationship with a new senior client, these strategies to build rapport with seniors can help.

Build Rapport With Seniors

Practice Active Listening

Many seniors fear losing their autonomy. You can ease those fears by letting them know you are there to listen to them and their needs. Do this by practicing active listening, which involves paying attention to what they are saying, looking interested, then asking follow-up questions. Feeling heard can ease tension and start to create that important bond.

Establish a Routine With Flexibility

It's often helpful for seniors to stay on a schedule, taking their meals and medication at the same time every day and enjoying routine activities throughout the week. However, the needs of seniors often change quickly, so caregivers will need to be flexible and adapt as needed.

Respect Their Independence

Many seniors choose to age in place at home because they don't want to lose their independence. Caregivers who respect that will find it easier to care for their clients. You can show respect for their independence by giving seniors as much control over their care as possible. Let them make decisions that won't impact their health or safety.

Have a Sense of Humor

Caregiving can be challenging work, but there is always space for humor. Laughing at a joke or sharing one of your own can help you break the ice with a new client. It can make the senior feel more comfortable around you and more eager to engage. It may also make it easier to talk about complex topics.

Share Your Personal Experiences

You don't have to share every detail of your life, but sharing stories about similar experiences can help build trust with a senior. For example, if you've cared for a senior loved one like a parent in the past, tell them a little about it if you are comfortable doing so. Even sharing some of your previous work experience can let a senior know you are an experienced carer with their best interests at heart.
