Summer Fun for Seniors and In Home Elderly Help
Summer is finally upon us; and after a particularly rough winter this year, we are welcoming the warmth! If your senior loved one is still relatively active, being outside as much as possible is probably on their agenda.
Summer fun for seniors can include a visit to a local park and nature trail for a leisure walk with a friends or family. Sometimes just sitting under a shady tree on a warm sunny day will be a perfect way to spend an afternoon. Relax and reminisce about summer games your loved one used to play and reflect on some fun memories together. When we take the time to truly listen to our elder loved ones, we can make them feel wonderful and you will too!
Family and food always seem to mesh well together. Summer is a wonderful time to prepare fresh meals and snap beans, shell peas and shuck some corn together. Fresh tomatoes from the garden taste delicious in a summer salad served with simple grilled burgers or chicken. Encourage water intake with water flavored with orange, lemon or lime to stay hydrated.
When possible, go swimming. It may be difficult to take your senior loved one swimming, but many YMCA’s and public pools offer senior swim times and early morning hours. Swimming is a great, low-impact activity, fun for all ages.
During the summer months, it is expected that the mercury will rise and we will be feeling the heat. It is advisable that the elderly do not spend extended periods of time outdoors during extreme heat and stay cool indoors. Seniors are more prone to heat-related illnesses, and should take special care that they do not get heat exhaustion. Summer fun for seniors can be taken indoors on especially hot days: take a course together a local recreation center or senior center. A fun class in dancing, art, or language lessons can be learned together for a special bonding experience.
