Give the Gift of Time and In Home Care for Elderly
The Christmas holiday is upon us and soon we will be exchanging gifts with one another. The look of pure joy on a child’s face will be priceless and getting a good laugh out of a friend or family member will be a wonderful reward for a thoughtful gift. There is no getting around the fact that the hustle and bustle of the holiday season is in full swing.
If you have an elderly loved one in your life, this is the time of year when the gift of time is far more valuable than cash or material things. Give your elderly parent or friend time and attention in the attitude of love, not obligation. Visit them with the attitude of patience and kindness. Time is more valuable than possessions because things can be replaced and time cannot. Generosity with our time, especially with an elderly loved one, is so important. As people get older, they treasure time and memories more. Sharing memories and giving the gift of time spent together with an elderly person is the most cherished present you can possibly give.
The key to giving the gift of time is finding something that engages your aging loved one. If you’re busy, it is important to tap into their interests, but in a way that meets your understandably busy schedule. If your loved one would like to get out and walk more, but it’s not safe outside due to chillier weather, take them to the mall with you while you pick up your Christmas goodies, or perhaps a local community arena. If your loved one has difficulty with mobility, being in a high traffic area might not be best. This is where you can spend quality time with them doing what they love in the comforts of their home. Many elderly love scrapbooking, looking through photo albums, listening to music, going for coffee, going to community events, going to the movies, and many other activities that just require spending time together.
It comes as no surprise that you may have so much going on and so much on your plate that you may not realize that an elderly loved one is not so busy this time of year. When we get so wrapped up in the details of the holiday season it is easy to forget that those without young children to surprise in their home are probably not feeling quite so festive. Often, the elderly get very few visitors, if any. Your loved one may not live close enough to you that a regular visit is possible. Many elderly aren’t fortunate enough to have family that visit regularly, let alone during the holiday season.
