Drinking Guidelines for Seniors and Alcohol Recommendations for New Year's Eve

Drinking is often a big part of New Year's Eve celebrations, but how much is safe for seniors to drink? Believe it or not, alcohol guidelines for seniors are relatively the same as for other adults when drinking in moderation. However, seniors should be more careful about making sure not to go over the recommended amount of alcohol on any given day. Senior Helpers of San Antonio North is happy to provide the necessary information about drinking guidelines for seniors, as well as a short list of alcohol recommendations for your New Year's Eve celebration!

What Are the Drinking Guidelines for Seniors?

Although drinking guidelines for seniors are similar to those for other adults, seniors do need to be more careful about sticking to the guidelines. Seniors are more at risk for certain health issues and should be mindful of what they're putting in their bodies.

According to the National Council on Aging, seniors should drink no more than three alcoholic beverages in one day and cap their weekly consumption to seven drinks. The daily consumption is the same as it is for younger adults, though the weekly consumption for younger adults should be capped at 14 alcoholic beverages.

Is It Okay for Seniors to Drink More Than Three Alcoholic Beverages in One Day?

Generally, seniors should not go over the recommended guidelines for alcohol, but everybody is different. Some seniors may be able to handle more than three drinks in one day while others won't be able to tolerate more than one. It's important to listen to your body and stop drinking when you feel as though it's unsafe to drink anymore.

If a senior is taking medication, carefully read the medication guidelines regarding alcohol consumption. It is dangerous to mix alcohol with some medications.

New Year's Eve Alcohol Recommendations

New Year's Eve is a time for celebrating the coming year. Drinking alcohol is a popular way to do this, and Senior Helpers of San Antonio North has a few great recommendations for your party!

Sparkling Wine

One of the most popular drinks for New Year's Eve is sparkling wine. It's a delicious alcoholic beverage that, when consumed in moderation, can make a great addition to your New Year's celebration.

Negroni Sbagliato

A negroni sbagliato is a type of cocktail that tends to be a crowd-pleaser. If you swap out the gin for prosecco, you can make a low-ABV version of the drink that's perfect for your senior loved ones!

New Year's Sparkler

A New Year's Sparkler is a type of cocktail that includes berry-flavored vodka, pomegranate juice, and sparkling wine. If you're a fan of fruity cocktails, this one might be perfect for you.
