Fitness Tips for Older Adults

It can be a challenge to find the right exercise plan. Between keeping a busy schedule, a lack of motivation, or expensive gym memberships, it’s easy to give up and fall out of our routines. However, there are many health benefits to maintaining our fitness as we age. Let’s take a look at some fitness tips for older adults!

  •  Set a schedule and goals. Set aside time for your workouts and write down goals you want to achieve. This will help keep yourself accountable and motivated. Post it where you can see it (on your calendar and phone).
  • Safety measures. Be mindful of obstacles and hazards that could cause falls or injuries. Make sure there is plenty of clear space for the activity and good lighting. Test what movements and equipment feel comfortable (you should always be able to control the weight or resistance level). Consider having someone present for assistance.
  • Get creative. Fitness shouldn’t be boring or expensive. Try mixing up your routine with swimming, water aerobics, yoga, or walking. There are many free online workout videos. Any physical activity even for short bursts of time is better than nothing. Make it fun by listening to music, inviting friends, or involving your pets!
  •  Listen to your body. It’s important to find what works best for you and your lifestyle. Bad days are naturally part of the journey. Stay focused and practice the proper form and techniques of each exercise. Minor soreness is normal but be mindful of safety and your limits.
  • Reward yourself. Celebrate your accomplishments! Track your progress and be proud of achieving your goals; even the little steps along the way. It’s never too late in life to be fit and healthy. Practice and dedication will lead to growth and success.

By keeping these tips in mind you can create your own goals and start your fitness plan. Maintaining strength and range of motion is paramount for daily activities and healthy aging. Although fitness is important, stay in tune with your overall health including your mental health, diet, and sleep. All of these factors work together for a healthy lifestyle.
