Seniors on the Go Exercise for the Elderly and In Home Elderly Care
Exercise is good for your health; there’s no debate about that. As we get older, the need to stay active becomes even more important. Daily movement doesn’t have to be rigorous to count, though. It’s not necessary to run marathons and lift heavy weights to reap the benefits of daily exercise. There are many forms of exercise that will help with balance, improve heart health, and strengthen muscles.
One low impact form of exercise that is good for everybody at any age is swimming. The water is relaxing and some say that it can temporarily reduce pain as the body feels weightless. Swimming is good for endurance and increases breathing and heart rate. This activity can be performed any time of year when an indoor pool is available. Local YMCA and gyms usually offer reasonable monthly rates and are a great investment toward endurance and heart health.
Another low impact exercise good for folks of all ages is brisk walking. Take a walk around the neighborhood. Sometimes the walk can also be a social activity, when friendly faces are also outside. Enjoy the cooler evenings in the summer and try midday walks when the weather is colder. When poor weather conditions make walking outside treacherous, take the brisk walking to a local mall. Many malls are open to the public an hour before the stores are open for business. Take this time to walk through without crowds and get some exercise this way during rainy, chilly or slippery days. After a walk, be sure to do some stretches to prevent injury and protect those strengthening muscles.
When increasing strength, the weights lifted don’t have to be extremely heavy. Sometimes all it takes it increase strength is to use repetition on lighter weights. Resistance bands are also a great option for increasing strength. If yoga is an option, check out local gyms for weekly classes. Many offer yoga classes for seniors. Beginner yoga classes will work just as well if senior classes are not offered.
Biking is a wonderful activity for getting outdoors and to enjoying the weather. Riding a bicycle is also beneficial for seniors because it is low impact and can help with arthritis, reduces blood pressure, and improves the mood. A pleasurable ride around the neighborhood is sure to bring on a smile. Bicycling is good for the environment because there are no burned fuels involved, and it’s good for your heart, both physically and emotionally. Sounds like a wonderful way to stay fit!
When it comes to exercising, what matters most is daily activity. Find something that is enjoyable and stick with it. The exercise doesn’t have to be strenuous to count; just keep moving.
