3 Astronomical Events to See With Senior Stargazers This Month

There are a few hobbies that lend themselves well to involving senior loved ones - and stargazing is one such hobby. Relaxing and fun, stargazing is a great way to connect with senior adults. Those who live in the Elmira, Ithaca, Corning, Bath, and Watkins Glen areas have several chances this month to catch striking astronomical events that will entrance and inspire seniors. Here are three must-watch events to see with senior stargazers this December, courtesy of Senior Helpers:

The Peak of the Geminid Meteor Shower

On the night of December 13, stargazers of all ages will be able to view the peak of the Geminid Meteor Shower, an event that will peak with up to 120 meteors per hour, according to Space Tourism Guide. Meteor activity will peak in the pre-dawn hours, and while you likely won't see dozens of meteors, with careful attention and a bit of luck, you should be able to see a truly stunning display.

Mercury at Its Evening Peak

On Christmas Eve, celebrate the season by catching a glimpse of tiny Mercury, which will be visible in the night sky above the western horizon. While it can be hard to see Mercury in the distance, if you bring along a telescope (don't forget to bring an extra one for your senior loved one), you should be able to see the little planet. Since this is a late evening event, make sure to bring warm clothing for both you and your companion.

The Conjunction of the Moon and Saturn

December 26 is when another astronomical event will take place, the Conjunction of the Moon and Saturn. You should be able to spot these two appear to be very close to each other just before sunrise. Saturn is a must-see for any budding stargazers, with the planet's barely-visible rings providing a striking contrast to the moon's glowing ambiance. Bring a high-quality camera to capture the incredible sight!

Senior Helpers Offers Comprehensive Programs and Services for Seniors

When involving your senior loved one in your stargazing hobby, there are a few things to keep in mind. Keep warm clothes and blankets in your car, since the weather can be unpredictable, and most astronomical events take place either late at night or early in the morning. It's also a good idea to have bottled water and a few extra snacks, just in case your senior loved one has a condition that involves blood sugar dips that require stabilization. With some advance planning and preparation, people of all ages, including seniors, can get a lot out of stargazing.
