As we continue to talk about safety for our aging loved ones, we thought we should bring up a topic that usually doesn’t go hand-in-hand with safety…food.
Unless you or your loved one have an allergy, food typically doesn’t seem dangerous. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. Undercooked or expired foods can lead to several health issues – some potentially life threatening.
Don’t let this scare you from the kitchen! With the proper safety measures your kitchen and your meals can be enjoyed by you and your senior! Here are a few safety tips:
Fully cook meat – cooking meat is vital as it kills harmful germs and makes the food edible. Click here for a list of safe minimum cooking temperatures.
Check expiration dates – different foods have different shelf lives, so always be sure to check expiration dates and toss any outdated items. Click here for a list of food items and their shelf life.
Keep up with recalls – Food recalls may occur more than you think, so be sure to be in the know. You can sign up to receive automatic alerts on food recalls and alerts here.
Remember the golden rule – when in doubt, throw it out!
