As we age we lose the ability to get light in our eye as well as go from light to dark which can cause dangerous situations in the home.
Follow these quick and simple steps to make sure your home is safer for your low-vision loved one:
- Down lighting – down lighting can create a glare that makes it difficult for your aging loved one to read print. Switching to up lighting, where the light reflects off the ceiling, creates a softer light making it easier for your loved one to see.
- Increase lightbulb wattage – Increasing the wattage of your elder loved one’s lightbulbs can greatly improve their vision. Seniors actually need 3 times the wattage to see the same as they did when they were 20 years old.
- Under counter lighting – many stoves and countertops do not have under counter lighting making it difficult to see if the oven is on or off. Adding under counter lighting and markers to the knobs can help increase your loved ones’ vision.
