Memory games are a terrific learning tool for children, but did you know they can also help improve your aging loved one’s mind? A recent study has shown that memory games help keep the mind mentally active and reduce the chance of developing Alzheimer’s or dementia.

Playing memory games for a few minutes every day can improve cognitive skills, keep your mind busy, and your body healthy.

Visual Memory Games – Place five to 10 random household objects on a tray (toothbrush, pencil, scissors, etc.). Allow your aging loved one to study the object on the tray for one minute. Have them look away, and remove one item. When they look at the tray again, they have to recall what item is missing.

Card Games – Lay a deck of cards face down (as shown in picture). Each player takes a turn flipping two cards over at a time. If the two cards show matching numbers, the player keeps the cards and goes again. If they do not match, turn the cards face down and the other players go. Whoever collects the most matching cards at the end of the game wins.

Audio Games – Play 30 seconds of a song or audio book, and have your aging loved one repeat what they have heard. Increase the play time by 10 second increments to see how much they can recall.

Exercising your brain is as important as exercising your body. Help your aging loved one keep their body and mind active to live longer and healthier lives.
