September is the perfect month to celebrate grandparents. September 7th is the actual holiday, but we should be celebrating our grandparents all the time. They have earned it. They have a lifetime of wisdom, insight, and stories to share. We often tune out the elderly or seniors in our community. We feel they cannot relate to our lives in this day and age. Nothing could be further from the truth. With all their life experience, grandparents have much to offer and it's time we started listening!
Celebrate your grandparents. Ask them to share their favorite stories. Listen to them when they speak about their lives. You may find out just how interesting your grandparents actually were. You may even want to record their stories so you have them for the future. Besides being a good listener, there are so many other ways to celebrate our grandparents. Find out what they really like to do these days and plan a special day for all of you.
There are so many things we can do to have everyone participate in a family fun day, including our seniors. A picnic at a park, such as Holmdel Park or Thompson Park in Monroe, can be a relaxing way to spend an afternoon. You can go to a movie that all ages can enjoy. With the new reclining seats at the theaters in Freehold and Eatontown, you know your seniors will be comfortable. If your grandparents like to stay closer to home, plan a bar-b-que right at home. Most grandparents just like to have the family under one roof every now and now. Finally, if your loved ones are having trouble getting around these days, do not make that a reason to leave them at home. With the help of a family member, friend or aide, your loved one can still do many of the things that they have always enjoyed. For more information on companions and licensed aides, please call Senior Helpers Home Care at (732)866-4488. We are always happy to answer your questions.
