Celebrating St Patricks Day and Assisted Living at Home
The weather is just beginning to feel more like spring in some parts of the country, while many places are still recovering from a particularly tough winter. St Patrick’s Day is a pleasant reminder that spring will soon be here and the warmer weather will return. St Patrick’s Day is holiday known for its Irish traditions and wearing lots of green. Most large cities around the country like to get into the Irish spirit every year. Chicago is known for dyeing its river green and many other cities around the country like Boston, San Francisco, New York City, and St Louis host widely popular St Patrick’s Day parades.
Some fun ways to celebrate St Patrick’s Day is to cook a home cooked Irish meal. Some traditional Irish foods include Shepherd’s Pie, Irish Soda bread, and Lamb stew. An Irish-American meal that immediately comes to mind is corned beef and cabbage. This meal is very easy to prepare in a slow cooker. Just place a portion of the corned beef, some carrots, cabbage and onions in the crockpot and cook on low all day. By dinnertime, a scrumptious dinner will be ready to eat! The best part of any holiday is being with the ones you love, so invite some friends and family to share this delicious meal. If you have an elderly loved one in your life with mobility difficulties, perhaps you can bring the feast to them. Nothing brightens a person’s day like a cooked meal and smiling faces.
Another fun way to celebrate St Patrick’s Day is to put on something green. Wearing this signature color represents spring, shamrocks, and Ireland. Many believe that if you are caught without this holiday’s signature color, you are in free range to receive a pinch. So, avoid the shame of a pinch punishment and throw on some green socks or a draw on a cute shamrock on your face.
St Patrick’s Day is usually associated with the pub scene, but that doesn’t mean that’s the only way to celebrate. Put on some traditional Irish music and pull out some card games that can be played together. If traditional tunes don’t sound that appealing, take a look at the popular music artists that hail from Ireland such as U2, the Cranberries and Van Morrison. The tunes are sure to put you in the St Patrick’s Day spirit!
