HOW TO KNOW IF YOUR LOVED ONE NEEDS HELP MAINTAINING THEIR HOME

In some situations, a senior’s growing need for assistance may be obviously apparent, and at other times, the need for assistance may be gradual and harder to detect.

“Most people don’t stop checking their mail or cooking just because they don’t feel like it,” said Director of Operations Mary O’Connor at the Senior Helpers Oak Brook Office. “There’s usually an underlying reason they don’t complete home chores anymore. These are just two of the signs that indicate a senior may need help maintaining their home.”

Unfortunately, some aging adults refuse to acknowledge or simply don’t recognize when their normal activities become overwhelming. When this happens, the responsibility may fall to their loved ones to identify the signs.

Here are eight reasons that your loved one may need a caregiver.

  • Bills are piling up
  • Missed household chores
  • Dirty clothes
  • Personality and behavior changes
  • Difficulty driving - accidents, dents or getting lost
  • Frequent falls and stumbles or bruising on their body
  • Body odor
  • Expired or rotten groceries in the pantry or fridge

“These are not the only signs that indicate your loved one needs help,” said O’Connor. “If you feel something is not right with your loved one or their home, they likely need help.”

If you are unsure the kind of help your loved one needs, Senior Helps can assess the situation and guide you to the type of help that would be best for your loved one. Senior Helpers can provide care for a few hours a day, all day or on a 24-hour basis.

Senior Helpers can provide light housekeeping, meal preparation, laundry, help the person bathe, drive to medical appointments or just be a companion and listen to the client.
