Celebrating Grandparents and In Home Help
"If you're lucky enough to still have grandparents, visit them, cherish them and celebrate them while you can." - Regina Brett
We are often working on our daily to-do lists and life can get pretty hectic at times. Finding time to relax and take a break for five minutes often feels like a mini vacation. While our lives can feel so busy, it is important to remember to take the time to cherish our grandparents whose workloads and schedules have most likely lightened up a bit.
One way to celebrate grandparents is to take the time to actually listen to them. If they have a story to tell, try to be completely present. Put down the cell phone, turn off the TV, and give them your undivided attention. Our elderly loved ones have lived through and experienced a lot in their lives; they have some stories to share. If we take time to listen, we may learn something valuable and have great memories of our loved ones to cherish forever.
Celebrating grandparents doesn’t have to involve tremendous planning or excessive energy. Simply including our elderly loved ones in our family updates, whether by mailed card with photos, or updates on social media, can help to keep our grandparents involved and included.
If you are lucky enough to live close to an elderly loved one, try to take the time to stop by for a weekly visit whenever possible. Even a simple stop for tea or coffee for a short conversation will help to make them feel valued and important. When a visit is not possible, make that quick phone call for a chat. It only takes a few minutes to update them on family events and other fun news that might be happening in daily life. A phone call is a fun way to perk up an elderly loved one’s day; just don’t forget to ask them about their day. Find out the latest gossip around the bingo table and learn about who their best friends are and what they do during the day for enjoyment.
Celebrating grandparents does not mean you have to throw a party in their honor. Simply taking the time to appreciate that they walked the earth before we did and have a wealth of knowledge and life experiences to share is enough to show that we care and value them. When there’s a free moment, pick up the phone to call or text, send a friendly card in the mail, or stop by to visit on the way home from work. Take the time to show you care, and that little bit will go a long way.
