Realistic Resolutions for Seniors and In Home Senior Care

Realistic Resolutions for Seniors and In Home Senior Care

The great ball drop on New Year’s Eve is symbolic of the passage of time from one year to the next.   It’s typical in the early hours of the New Year to make resolutions to enhance our future.  Many revelers vow to get healthy and exercise more.  Some resolve to save more money in the New Year.  It doesn’t have to be a huge decision to make drastic changes in life to be an effective resolution.  There are many realistic resolutions for our senior loved ones that can make an impact on a higher quality of life.

Eating well balanced and healthy meals is not only a way to lose weight; it also assists with becoming healthier overall.   Learning to cut out processed foods such white sugar and flour are great ways to slim the waistline.  Start using whole and organic food items while leaving ingredients with names that are difficult to pronounce, as those typically are man-made chemicals.  When we eat healthier foods, we feel better.  Simply making better choices about the cleaner foods we put into our bodies will lead to feeling happier and provide renewed energy.

Adding exercise to the daily routine is a common resolution for most people.  It may seem like the only way to reap benefits is to train hard.  This is not the case; adding a low impact activity such as walking just twenty minutes a day is a wonderful way to help circulate the blood and to get the heart pumping.  Walking can take place in your neighborhood or in a local shopping center or mall.  Add a friend for conversation and it’s a wonderful way to catch up and socialize as well.  While exercising may seem like a typical resolution for most people to lose weight, it does more than just get your body in shape.   Exercise doesn’t have to be strenuous to reap the many benefits such as improved symptoms of anxiety and depression.  Regular exercise will help you feel better physically, which will result in feeling better emotionally and mentally.

Another realistic resolution for seniors is to plan to learn how to efficiently use the internet.  Connecting to the web and social media is a great way to stay aware of current events and keep involved with family and friends who might not live nearby.  It is important to feel connected to those we love and the internet is a wonderful way to make this happen.

When it comes to staying connected with family and friends, do not take for granted the power of a handwritten note.  Seniors who have grandchildren who live far away will appreciate getting to know their grandparents through a pen pal system with letters in the mail.  Even if grandchildren live in the same city or state, they will love receiving a real piece of mail!  Seniors who stay in touch with family and friends are more likely to feel content.
