Senior Helpers Teaches Mah Jongg at The Summit Retirement Community

Have you heard of the game Mah Jongg?

Mah Jongg, also known as American Mahjong, is a variant of a game that originated in China. Senior Helpers of Hockessin, Delaware gave its first instruction class today at The Summit Retirement Community located on Limestone Road in Hockessin, Delaware.

Mah Jongg is played with four players using tiles stamped with Chinese symbols. The goal is to match a group of tiles to a hand listed on purchased scorecards distributed annually by the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL). Each pre-determined hand is associated with points listed on the NMJL scorecard. The hands change each year and the points are used for scoring purposes. The first player to match their tiles to the hands on the NMJL scorecard wins points associated to that hand. To play, tiles are picked and discarded as in many popular card games.

The instruction session was so much fun!

Blake Turnbull, RN, BSN at Senior Helpers gave instructions with seasoned resident players Nadine Goldfinger and Ann May on how to play without using the point system. Mah Jongg students included Janet Moyer, Millie McGillivray, Dorothy Deaven, Janet Schoenbeck, Frank & Patsy Phares, and Ginny Pizzala.

Bobbie Hartz, owner of Senior Helpers would like to thank Scott Thomas, Activities Director and Meg Farrugia, Events Planner at The Summit Retirement Community for setting this up.  We look forward to next week’s session!
