Tips for Traveling with Family and In Home Help

The cooler weather that comes with fall makes being outdoors feel a lot more enjoyable; it’s not too hot and not too cold.  Fall brings the perfect weather for just about anything.  This is when traveling becomes a great option for families.  What a wonderful way to spend time with those you love than to visit some place new together.  New adventures can create lasting memories.

When traveling with elderly loved ones, there are a few things to consider.  If your senior loved one is currently on medications, you’ll want to make sure that you have enough with you to last the length of the trip and that it’s possible to get a refill where you will be traveling in case it does run out.  Bring a list of the generic names of the prescriptions as well, if traveling outside of the country.  Also keep a list of doctors’ names and phone numbers with you for emergency.   It’s helpful to bring headache medicines, antibacterial ointments, and other remedies for whatever may ail your loved one while traveling.  Be sure that your loved one stays hydrated; it’s very easy to forget to drink fluids when flying or on long road trips.  If your family is traveling by car, be sure to stop every once in a while to stretch your legs and keep the blood flowing.

When flying with an elderly loved one, you may want to bring along a few items to make the flight more comfortable.  Because of medications, your loved one may feel a chill a lot easier than you do.  Bring a small blanket, travel pillow and perhaps a sleep mask to help them to feel at ease and relax.  It is best to keep medications in a carryon bag in case of lost luggage.  Be sure to have all medications in a clear bag and follow Travel Security Administration guidelines on allowed liquid rules.  Check with current airport guidelines for those adults over 75 years who are traveling; they usually get expedited security clearance to reduce waiting.  If your loved one uses a wheelchair, it can be gate checked when boarding the plane.  After landing in your destination, the wheelchair will be waiting for easy transition back into the airport.

Some tips for traveling with family include bringing little snacks.  When traveling by car, it can grow tiresome to eat at every truck stop and fast food restaurant.  Sometimes an apple, granola bar, or bottle of water is all your family needs to feel energized again.

When traveling with family, remember to take lots of photos.  The memories may fade, but a photograph lasts forever.  And after the photo is taken, remember to put down the camera and enjoy the loved ones who have joined you on your adventure!
