Between concerts, cook outs, and pool parties, there always seems to be something to do in the summer time. However, finding something to keep your aging loved one entertained and cool can be a different story. But don’t worry. There is plenty of cool summer fun to be had by all.
Some say summer is best spent outdoors while others wish they could hibernate until cooler weather blows back. Keep in mind that everyone is different so the first thing you want to do is ask your senior what weather they prefer. Then it’s time to start planning. Here’s a little jump start to your summer activity planning.
One fun way to break up the hot summer heat is to find a way to be by the water. Fishing is a relaxing way to spend time in the sun. Being by the water is beneficial for the cooling benefits should your aging loved one suddenly feel overheated. You can just walk into the lake to cool down for a bit and find some shade under a nearby tree. Fishing is not only a way to get your loved one outside for a bit of time, but also very stress relieving.
If your aging loved one doesn’t seem to mind the summer heat, you may inspire them to take up gardening. You can assist your loved one with a flower bed or a little vegetable garden in their backyard. This is a great way to get them outside every day, even if it’s just a few minutes for minor weeding or picking fresh produce. This also helps your loved one to keep fresh fruits and vegetables in their diet which will also benefit their overall health.
Spending some time in the sunshine can do a world of good for mood and health for an aging loved one. If the temperature is rising too quickly, take shade and just enjoy the warmth of the season together. Some local areas have evening concerts at the park that may also be a good pick to get outside but away from the strong UV rays of midday. A lovely porch swing or a lawn chair under a big tree can be the comfortable setting your loved one needs to unwind and relax. Bring a good book, some iced tea or lemonade, pick a seat in the shade and enjoy!
