At the start of every year, millions of Americans write down their New Year’s Resolutions. Some of the top resolutions are to lose weight, exercise more, save money, and quit smoking. These are all great resolutions, but here is a list of resolutions specifically to take care of your brain.

  1. Sleep more. Sleeping consistently for 7 - 9 hours a night is vital to brain health. Not getting enough sleep can lead to side effects dealing with memory and thinking.
  2. Exercise more. Physical activity increases blood flow to the brain and elevates mood.

  3. Eat well. Eat a more plant-based diet, incorporating more fruits and vegetables especially leafy greens. Limit red meats, fried foods, sugar, and processed foods.

  4. Learn something new. Learning helps exercise your brain. Keeping your mind active is as important as keeping your physical body active.

  5. Stay social. Interacting with others and being connected keeps endorphin levels high. It’s important for cognitive stimulation and mood.
