Caring for a loved one is not an easy task. As a caregiver, you are not only responsible for your own well-being, but for the well-being of your loved ones. This huge responsi­bility easily leads to a stressful life, making caregivers more at risk for heart disease. But, don’t worry (or stress!)—heart disease is preventable. Altering your lifestyle and diet can greatly reduce the risk of heart disease. We’ve come up with a few tips that can make all the difference in your life, and the lives of those you care for!

Know the risks. Knowing and understanding the risks of heart disease is the first step towards a healthy heart.

Change it up. Once you know the risks, it’s important to change your life to help your heart. Change isn’t easy, but sometimes it is necessary. Work a little breathing exercise into your daily routine, snack on an apple instead of chips. Small changes can do big things!

Keep a keen eye. It is easy to lose track of time and let your old habits slip in. Make a mental note to watch yourself throughout the day to make sure you keep on track. Improving your lifestyle can also rub off on your clients and loved ones.

Let loose! Maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle may not be the most exciting thing in the world, so make sure you include some fun activities in your life!  Are you a sports fan?  We have several teams and sporting events in the Des Moines area including; the I-Cubs triple AAA baseball team, the Des Moines Energy basketball team, Des Moines Buccaneers hockey, the arena football Des Moines Barnstormers as well as high school and college teams.  You can also head to many of the Des Moines area parks and have a nice walk or play catch. Love flowers? Take some time out of your schedule to plant a few seeds. Mixing healthy activities with your interests is a great way to have some fun while maintaining a healthy heart!

February is American Heart Month so it is good timing to focus on these tips to make sure you and your loved one’s heart stays strong.
