Stress is a major factor for poor heart heath. Luckily, stress can be managed! It’s easy to let stress take over your life, but it is important to remember that taking a deep breath and facing your stress triggers can lead to a healthier lifestyle for you and those around you. We’ve all heard someone tell us to take a deep breath, and we may have thought it was silly, but it is a medically-proven fact that taking a few deep breaths can alert your brain to calm your body down and immediately relieve stress.

• Remember to take a breath. We know everyone has a busy schedule, but it is important to pencil in 5-10 minutes each day to sit back and relax. Deep breathing is one of the best ways to lower stress in the body. This is because when you breathe deeply it sends a message to your brain to calm down and relax.

• Slow it down. Remember, it is not a race. Rushing around can be dangerous not only to you, but to those around you. Next time you feel yourself starting to run, stop and relax.

• Stretch it out. Not only is stress a mental and emotional drain, it can also cause physical problems. It seems like everywhere we turn these days there is more stress. Stretching can easily be done from your desk, couch, etc. When you start to feel jittery, slowly stretch your muscles to relieve tension that can cause stress.
