Osteoporosis - Support and Care with Senior Helpers

You might be asking yourself, what is osteoporosis? According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, it means “porous bone”, or lacking the strength that a bone should have. Osteoporosis is a bone disease that transpires when the body loses too much bone, makes too little bone, or both. When it comes to seniors, osteoporosis can be a very dangerous thing. Why is it so serious? Bones become fragile, and can easily break from a fall. Even in worst case scenarios, bones can break from a sneeze or minor bumps. These fractures can cause permanent pain and may limit mobility. This can lead to the senior feeling isolated, or even depressed.  Osteoporosis can even cause seniors to lose height when the disease affects the bones of the spine, this is why it is common to see seniors with a hunched posture.

There are three common types of bone loss:

  • Osteopenia: Moderate bone loss with an increased risk of fracture

  • Osteoporosis: Severe bone loss associated with a higher risk of fracture

  • Osteomalacia: Softening of the bones due to a deficiency of vitamin D or calcium- this is much less common than osteopenia and osteoporosis

If you think you or a loved one might have osteoporosis, it is important to talk to your healthcare provider about testing and treatments!

If you are a family caregiver for someone with osteoporosis, you already know that is a challenge. Yes, caregiving is rewarding, but also very hard work. You need to know that it is okay to ask for help, especially when you’re caring for a loved one with osteoporosis. If you are feeling overwhelmed, and like you are unable to manage at home, it might be time to bring in some backup. This can offer you respite and peace of mind so that you are able to manage other daily responsibilities you have besides caregiving for your loved one. At Senior Helpers our professionally trained caregivers can provide your loved one with personal, one-on-one assistance with:

  • Meal preparation

  • Transportation

  • Activities of daily living (ambulation, bathing, continence, dressing, eating, transferring, and toileting)

  • Gait supervision

  • Assistance to prevent falls

  • Assistance with weight-bearing exercises to increase bone mineral density
