Summer Safety Tips and Live in Senior Care
The mercury is officially starting to rise and the summer weather is here. With warming temperatures, we tend to feel busier and more time is spent outdoors. With more fun in the sun, it is important to remember some simple summer safety tips.
One thing to always keep in mind is that it is easier to get dehydrated in the heat of the day. The signs of dehydrations include dizziness, sticky mouth, headaches and muscle cramps. Our elderly loved ones who may be taking medications such as diuretics that can create thirst, are more susceptible to dehydration. It is very important to remember to drink liquids. One key summer safety tip is to carry around a water bottle at all times. Having water easily accessible is helpful for reminding our elderly loved ones to drink more water and stay hydrated.
Another summer safety tip for our elderly loved ones is to help them to dress in loose fitting, light-colored, cotton clothing. It is helpful to wear long sleeves and pants on days spent outdoors, but that can become uncomfortable, so your loved one can dress in layers that can be removed upon getting warmer and apply sunscreen. Bring along a wide-brimmed hat or a sun umbrella to help block some of the sun’s rays.
When venturing outside for some recreational fun, remember to put safety first. If your elderly loved one enjoys a leisure activity such as bicycling, remember that even adults risk falling and injury. A summer safety tip for biking is to put on a safety helmet. Helmets are very effective in preventing brain injuries and should be worn whenever on a bicycle.
Summer safety tips also include preparing and storing food items during popular summer events such as barbecues. Food items such as mayonnaise and any salads that contain that ingredient should be stored safely out of the sun. After the meal is served, it is important to put foods on ice fifteen minutes later. Remembering to bring in food and making sure foods are fully cooked, is an important summer safety tip to prevent food poisoning and a possible trip to the hospital.
Finding ways to stay safe does not have to make summer a bummer. Simply keeping these safety tips in mind will prevent any major danger, but still allows for warm weather fun.
