Our History
Senior Helpers of Tempe, AZ Owner, John Skelton & his Grandfather

Our History

Senior Helpers of Tempe was proud to join the exceptional team of Senior Helpers owners in 2020.  John Skelton was inspired to start providing quality care to the senior population for two personal reasons. Growing up he witnessed the challenges his family experienced while trying to care for his grandmother- who suffered from Alzheimer’s and his grandfather- who chose to live alone and at-home into his late 80’s. He also recognized the importance of providing personalized care to the senior population during his time as Board Secretary for The Tempe Community Action Agency and volunteering at Senior Congregant  Meals.

Senior Helpers was founded in 2002 by Tony Bonacuse with the help of Peter Ross after their firsthand experience in caring for their respective family members. Tony and Peter identified a need that was not being filled properly by the other companies.  They realized that most seniors would prefer to age in their own home rather than move into an unfamiliar institution. Unfortunately, the options available to most seniors were very limited. Most seniors did not have access to well-trained, dependable and affordable in-home care. This was the mission-driven spark that started Senior Helpers.

Our process

Our process

The first step in the process is a complimentary, initial in-home care assessment with a Senior Helpers consultant.  This assessment can help you understand the true needs of your loved one, and your options. Together we can discuss their needs, our senior care services and determine what’s best for your entire family.

We will cover:

  • Your family's specific goals
  • Your loved one's daily plan design and schedule
  • Pricing and payment methods
  • Implementation process
  • Ongoing communication and follow-up plan

John Skelton

Owner and Client Advocate

John Skelton opened Senior Helpers of Tempe in 2020 joining the Senior Helpers family already established in Arizona and Nationwide. John has been in Valley and Tempe since first moving to Arizona when he was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals during the 2010 NFL Draft. After playing four years in the NFL John worked a variety of different jobs before realizing that there must be a way to combine his love for helping people and a career. A mission driven business that helps the greater good.

Growing up in El Paso, TX John watched as his Mother and Father worked tirelessly as they cared for his Grandparents in their later years. They were two of millions of unpaid caregivers throughout the United States. A number that will continue to grow in the coming years. Currently, John is Board Secretary for the Tempe Community Action Agency- a non-profit helping some of Tempe most vulnerable citizens, including its Senior Population. It was during his time with TCAA that the issues facing Seniors locally were first brought to his attention. Senior Helpers has been able to fill a gap that social services and non-profits can’t fill.
