Thanking Caregivers and In Home Health Care
November is the time of year that is usually most known for the traditional holiday of Thanksgiving. With just three weeks left to prepare, we have sufficient time to think of things to be thankful for. Caregivers are people who deserve a lot of appreciation, especially this time of year. Paid or unpaid, these people spend more time caring for others than they typically do themselves. It truly takes a special, patient person be a caregiver. This November, make it a point to thank a caregiver.
One way to thank a caregiver is to give them a day off. We often forget that they sacrifice so much to care for our loved ones. If a family member is caring for Mom or Dad, be sure to pick out a specific date for them to count on time to themselves. Caregivers sometimes find it difficult to ask for time off. If your family member is the primary caregiver and reluctant to take time away from caring for an elderly loved one, be persistent. It is so important that our caregivers take the break to recharge and to refresh.
Another way to thank a caregiver in your family is to send them a little surprise in the mail. Perhaps they have been eyeing a new book by a favorite author or raving about a delicious restaurant nearby. A special token of appreciation in the form of a gift card to their favorite store will send the message that they are appreciated. The amount spent on the gift card doesn’t have to be extravagant; even a little bit makes a big difference. A random delivery of flowers can also do wonders to show a caregiver that you are thinking of them and appreciate all they do.
When it comes time to thank a caregiver, sometimes words say everything. Caregivers don’t often don’t hear “thank you” enough. November is the perfect month to honor those who care for others. A simple and effective gesture of gratitude is to take the time to sit down and speak to your family caregiver about how thankful you are they are in your loved one’s life. For most people, a thoughtful note or card is often more valuable than any monetary gift. This Thanksgiving, when we are counting our blessings, be sure to add the name of your favorite caregiver to the list of those to be thankful for.
