It’s finally springtime. The flowers are blooming and the trees are sprouting their leaves. Soon gardens will have produce and the summer months will bring warmth and lots of sunshine. With the heat of summer also comes the fun seasonal holidays full of celebration, relaxing and cooking out.
The yearly holidays to celebrate our parents are among the special days in the spring and summer months. Mother’s Day has just passed and hopefully you were able to share the joyous day with your mom. Mother’s Day was created to remind us of the hard work our moms have put into creating a family unit and helping to shape us into the responsible adults we have become. Father’s Day is just around the corner. Dad also deserves some attention and appreciation as well. If your loved one is coping with a dementia related disease like Alzheimer’s, these holidays may serve as a reason to reminisce about the good ole days when you were a child and the kinds of mischief you got into. Perhaps picking your mom’s favorite flower or taking your dad out for a stroll in a nearby park will help to you to feel closer to your aging parents.
Spring and summer holidays are usually full of good times and lightheartedness. Memorial Day weekend usually kicks off the summer season until Labor Day in September. The Fourth of July is approaching and it will be time for friends and family, parades, fireworks, and sparklers. Maybe the familiar smell of grilling hotdogs and BBQs in the air will bring up some memories in your loved one. If nothing else, being outside in the warm air will surely bring a smile to their face. If the memories are sparked by the scent of fresh cut grass or a familiar tune playing on the radio while grilling outside, be sure to take the time to listen to your loved one’s stories! Perhaps try to write these anecdotes down for future preservation in a keepsake scrapbook.
Your aging loved one may find it increasingly difficult to remember day to day events. You may find that certain smells, songs or times of day can reinvigorate them and will help to revive their memory. This summer, filled with easygoing occasions, light meal preparations and gathering of friends and family for celebrations, try to stay on the lookout for sparks of remembering from your loved one. They may have some stories to tell that you will cherish forever, making these the holidays to remember!
What are your favorite holidays in to celebrate? Do you enjoy being outside when the weather is warmer?
