The weather is nice, sunny and warm. It is a perfect time to add outdoor activity to your life if it isn’t there already. Walking is a simple form of exercise that has many benefits, such as aiding digestion and lowering blood pressure. Walking outside has the added benefits of quiet time in nature and absorbing some Vitamin D from the sun (15 minutes is enough sun to get the vitamin D, don’t get burned!). To get motivated to walk on a regular basis, it helps to create a program. Before you start, consult with your physician to be sure a walking program would be safe for you and make sure you have good quality, supportive shoes.

For beginners, start with walking short distances like half of a mile. If that is easy, start increasing the time that you walk up to 5 minutes each time. Speed is not important but posture is, keep your head lifted and relax your shoulders. Swing your arms naturally and breathe deeply. If you can't catch your breath, slow down or avoid inclines and hills. Walking poles can be helpful to keep your balance. After your walk is finished, take a few minutes to do some simple stretches to release any muscle tension.

Easy walks to start with in SLO County are:

The Salinas Riverwalk in Paso Robles is flat and well maintained.

Atascadero Lake. Almost two miles, flat trail around the lake at the park.

Laguna Lake trail in San Luis Obispo. 1.4 mile loop, easy walk with views of the hills.

Meadow Creek trail in Pismo Beach. Covers the butterfly grove and the boardwalk.
