If you are a senior, or will be assisting a senior that is traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday, reviewing these preparations will aid in making the holiday travel smooth sailing.

One of the easiest ways to lighten the travel load is to pack smart. Take the minimum amount of clothing that you will need and do laundry at your destination. It is much easier to manage a smaller bag than a large one - a wheeled option is easy to pull around instead of carry.

Some items are important to bring for health and safety reasons, like the following:

  • an extra pair of glasses if you wear them
  • a small notebook for jotting things down
  • full supply of medications if you take any
  • water - stay hydrated during travel!

For the mobility challenged, call transportation companies ahead of time and find out what their special accommodations are. Give yourself extra time to get around busy travel centers like airports. Even if you are in a wheelchair, you may have to remove your shoes or be searched when going through airport security.

Seniors should also take advantage of any senior discounts when booking lodging and transportation. Amtrak gives seniors a 15% discount. Ask for 55+ discounts and use your association discounts if you have them (like AARP and AAA).

Once at the destination, it is beneficial to keep to your normal schedule by waking and retiring at the same time and having meals at the usual times. Visiting with family and friends is wonderful but can also be exhausting for a senior, so make sure to schedule in some time for rest and go to bed at your usual hour.

If a senior family member that normally resides in a care facility will be joining the family during the holiday, consider hiring a helper to help keep them comfortable while they are away from home. A caregiver can help with getting around the family home, trips to the restroom and eating and drinking.
