Senior home safety checklist:
- Lighting is bright and all burned out bulbs are replaced.
- Working smoke detectors are placed in key areas, such as the bedroom and kitchen.
- Telephones are placed in easy-to-reach spots and adjusted to high-volume ringer and receiver if needed.
- Nightlights are placed at necessary points between the bedroom and bathroom.

- Regularly-used kitchen items are stored at levels that do not require reaching or bending over.
- Water heater setting is kept below a scalding temperature.
- A flashlight with fully charged batteries is kept near the bed. Additional flashlights can be helpful, especially if the home is multi-level.
Mobility becomes more difficult with age, and maintenance of walkways is an important element of senior home safety. Make sure paths from room to room are wide and uncluttered, and all carpeting and rugs are tacked or taped down securely. Stairways should be equipped with sturdy handrails, and individual steps should not be too steep or tall. You can have additional steps or ramps built if you notice your elderly parents struggling to go up or down the stairs.
