First Step: Identifying Your Loved One’s Needs and Making a List

Health care agencies are better able to meet the needs of the patient, if they know what the needs are from the beginning. Do not shy away from stating your loved one's needs. Use your list. Keep it at hand, and go over the list with the representative.

The following is a list you may want to use:

- Do your parents need assistance with dressing, grooming, and bathing?
- Does your loved one need to be involved in brain healthy activities?
- Does dad need more social interaction?
- What about meal preparation, and dietary needs?
- Fall prevention, transfers, and help with ambulation
- Daily exercise routine
- Medication reminders
- Transportation to doctor's appointments
- Will anyone care for the pet?
- Help with patient’s laundry, and bed linens

Second Important Step: Information You Need From a Home Health Care Agency

This next step is needed because you need to find out if the agency is accredited, qualified, and able to care for your loved one. This is a list of important information you need from the home health agency:

- Type of care or services provided
- Proof of required state licenses, and accreditation
- Proof of insurance
- Does the agency take care of a caregiver's Workers Compensation, and taxes, or do you have to take care of all of these issues?
- What steps does the agency take in keeping up with drug testing and background checks?
- What is the cost associated with the services provided?
- Does the agency provide continued caregiver training?
- How is the agency paid?

We hope these two preliminary steps will help you start the process in finding care for your loved one.
