As we share our hearts with loved ones this Valentine’s Day, we also can show our heart for others as part of National Donor Day, which takes place on February 14th as well.

National Donor Day is a celebration of all that organ, eye, and tissue donors make possible with their gift of life. Did you know that each day, approximately 79 people receive organ transplants? Today, more than 120,000 patients are on the waiting list to receive a lifesaving organ transplant, and countless others are in need of cornea, tissue, bone marrow, blood and platelet donation.

This year, when you are ordering flowers, making reservations, and looking for the perfect gift for your valentine, know that you can also celebrate love, life, and National Donor Day in the following ways:

  1. Learn the facts.
  2. Sign up to be a tissue or an organ donor. You can elect to do so through your driver’s license/identification, or by visiting donatelife.net or organdonor.gov.
  3. Talk about your decision with your friends and family.
  4. Include donation in your advance directives, will and living will.
  5. Those already registered as a donor can also help spread the message of donation. Share information and stories about the power of organ donation and transplantation online.
