Fun Fall Plans for Seniors and Caregivers

Autumn is a wonderful time of the year. The weather is perfect. It's not too hot and not too cold. The trees are beautiful and everything looks so pretty. It is also just the right time of the year to plan outdoor activities, especially for seniors

Keeping Family Close

We all have such busy lives these days. It's hard enough spending time with our wives, husbands, and children let alone trying to find time to spend with parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Sometimes we get so caught up in our day to day routines, we forget just how important and entertaining spending time with family can actually be.

Celebrating Grandparents

September is the perfect month to celebrate grandparents. September 7th is the actual holiday, but we should be celebrating our grandparents all the time. They have earned it. They have a lifetime of wisdom, insight, and stories to share. We often tune out the elderly or seniors in our community. We feel they cannot relate to our lives in this day and age. Nothing could be further from the truth. With all their life experience, grandparents have much to offer and it's time we started listening!

Medication Reminders

One of the biggest issues that face seniors today is the management of their medication. Due to a variety of reasons, including the cost of medications, the inability to remember to take medication and the belief that many of their prescriptions are simply unnecessary, many seniors are not taking their medications as prescribed by their doctors. This is a huge problem in managing the many conditions, illnesses and diseases which occur as our loved ones age.

The Importance of Health History

All individuals should maintain an updated health history, however, this is especially important for seniors. Seniors have more health conditions, more emergencies and more routine doctor visits and certainly more hospital stays. Although an updated health history should be a priority, especially among seniors, it rarely is one.

Benefits of Seniors Living at Home

There are so many benefits to keeping a loved one in their own home. Many seniors have spent years living in their home and have grown attached to both their living space and the items in it. They might be extremely reluctant to leave familiar surroundings. Most seniors do not like change and major changes may cause a great deal of stress for your loved one. Many people do not realize that stress and changes in routine can exacerbate both physical and neurological ailments. Keeping stress to a minimum can help your parent in the long run.

Tips on Staying at Home

Most seniors would like nothing better than to age gracefully in their own homes. No one wants to be asked to leave a house they have loved for many years. Unfortunately, this happens quite often. Children and other family members sometimes feel their loved ones would be better off in some type of facility, such as a long term care unit or an assisted living. This does not have to be the case, however. With the right information and tools, seniors can age in the comfort of their own homes.
