Honoring Our Heroes: Armed Forces Day

May 16, 2015 is National Armed Forces Day!

Do you have a special veteran in your life? Honor them on Armed Forces Day with these ideas:

Listen to their stories: As your loved ones age, they enjoy talking about their past. If you have a veteran in your family, make sure to ask them questions about their days in the military. Ask them to share several of their favorite stories with you. Bring the grandchildren along to hear the stories. You will be surprised at how interested they are in listening.

Raising flag ceremony: While you and your senior may not be able to raise a flag on a flag pole to honor friends and family who served in the Armed Forces, you can certainly put a flag outside your home on a porch or wherever you choose! Let your senior decorate a poster board with photos of family or friends who served who they would like to honor.

Baking cookies: Encourage your senior loved one to bake patriotic cookies in honor of Armed Forces Day!

Volunteer: Maybe your loved one is interested in doing some volunteer work. Finding ways to keep busy is so important for seniors and volunteering is a wonderful way to fill in some extra time during the day.

Finally, if you or a loved one served in the military, you should be aware that there are several benefits that may be available to you. For more information, please call your local Senior Helpers today!
