Strong Bones, Strong Bodies: Foods that Fight Osteoporosis

Got Milk?
Okay, that may sound a little cliché, but calcium is extremely important for your body. Calcium (found in milk and various other foods) is a mineral stored in bones and teeth, where it supports structure a
nd hardness. What does that have to do with Osteoporosis? Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones. It occurs when your body loses too much bone, makes too little bone or both. As a result, bones become weak and can break from a minor fall or, in serious cases, even from simple actions (like coughing or bumping your elbow).
Perhaps you aren’t a milk fan? No worries! There are plenty of other beverages and foods that provide your body with calcium. Take a look at a few here:
Orange Juice - Calcium-fortified OJ is a fine substitute for milk. It contains as much calcium as milk and it delivers a day’s worth of vitamin C, which is essential for the formation of collagen (a vital component of bone matrix).
Greens - Tasty greens are among the best plant sources of calcium. A 3/4-cup serving of cooked collards contains about as much calcium as a glass of milk. Collard greens also contain vitamin K, which contributes to bone health.
Nuts - Peanuts, almonds, cashews, soybeans and their butters are all terrific sources of magnesium, which plays an important part in how your body uses calcium. Without adequate magnesium, the hormones that regulate calcium metabolism can’t do their job properly.
Sweet Potatoes - Sweet potatoes are a fantastic source of potassium, which research suggests may boost bone health. Bananas are also a great source of potassium.
Salmon - This fatty fish is a delicious source of vitamin D, which helps the body metabolize and absorb the calcium in food. Try getting the canned salmon with the bones! The bones are so tiny you will hardly notice them AND they are loaded with calcium!
Keep your bones in mind next time you reach in the refrigerator for a drink or snack! You can learn more about Osteoporosis symptoms and prevention here: http://www.nof.org/.
