Gifts for People with Parkinson’s Disease

If you have a loved one who is living with Parkinson’s disease, and you find yourself unsure of what to get them for an upcoming birthday or holiday, don’t worry. Parkinson’s is a disease that progresses slowly over time and brings a myriad range of symptoms with it. Giving a gift is a great opportunity to help make a difference in their lives, and even a small gift can have a huge impact.

Research shows that regular exercise can help ease the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, as well as slow the progression of the disease. Something like a set of small, light weights, or a portable stationary bike can help them to bring the gym into their living room and allow them to get their circulation going.

One issue with Parkinson’s is maintaining dental health, as the symptoms that interfere with regular movement can make using a toothbrush difficult or even impossible. Something like an electric toothbrush or a pump or automatic toothpaste dispenser can greatly reduce the complexity of the task. Other automatic grooming devices like electric razors or trimmers can also help them maintain their hygiene easily.

Almost half of people who are living with Parkinson’s disease report finding relief from their symptoms with complementary therapies. Consider treating your loved one to a membership in something like a tai chi or yoga class, or maybe a gift certificate for a few rounds of acupuncture or acupressure treatment, or massages. Heating pads or electric massagers can also provide relief while being easy to operate.
